Baggage Security Tips

As with many airports, baggage theft at EZE (Ministro Pistarini, Ezeiza, Buenos Aires International) Airport has been a major problem in recent years. On my last trip to Buenos Aires, I was a victim myself. For obvious reasons, this is rarely reported on by media outside of Argentina, and although nothing is absolutely safe, there are a few things you can do to make your luggage less inviting to los ladrones, or thieves.

BAGGAGE SECURITY TIPS

Don’t leave anything in your checked baggage that you cannot live without. Also sensitive documents, medication, cash, cameras, ipods, jewelry etc, should be kept in your carry-on luggage.
If the service is available, as it is at EZE and many international airports, have your luggage wrapped tightly in multiple layers of cellophane. This safety measure is of course not full-proof, but it does improve your odds. Click here to see one of the many examples of this on You Tube. If you want to wrap the bags yourself, make sure you leave the handles free for the luggage handlers.
In addition to the cellophane wrap, you can use a TSA-approved lock to add an additional layer of security. However, be advised that most of these locks are very small and easy to break, so don’t even think that a lock will replace the first two tips.

Polo in Argentina

Argentina has produced the best Polo players in the world, and their national team has remained unbeaten for 60 years. Many of these players come from the Estancias, where Polo Dynasties still keep the game alive. Another sport played in Argentina which is very similar to polo is that of Pato. For all of you polyglots out there, you will not be surprised to know that it was actually played with a live duck. The goal was for each team to carry the duck (which was in a basket) on a stick to one end of the field and put it in a larger basket to score a goal. Today, Polo is played throughout the world and from October to December the best players in the world will head South to compete in the Argentine Open, the Tortugas Open and the Hurlingham Open.
